Step 5: Attend Winter Conditioning

During the winter, our team trains after school at TJ in preparation for the spring season. In fall 2021, winter conditioning will start on December 1st. Our coach-led winter conditioning sessions take place from 4 PM to 6:15 PM each weekday. Regular attendance for winter conditioning workouts is essential to success in the spring, and is HIGHLY recommended, especially for novice rowers who have never touched an oar. Learn more about winter conditioning here. (If you are already planning to do a winter sport, no problem! Just try to attend winter training whenever you get the chance so you can learn some of the basic techniques you'll need in the spring.)

Step 6: Dress for Success

All TJ Crew rowers are required to race in TJ Crew Uniforms (or "uni"s for short). See our Uniforms & Gear page for more details. Additionally, we have numerous accessories that almost all team members purchase for their own benefit, including TJ Crew duffel bags, TJ Crew jackets, and TJ Crew hats. TJ Crew rowers performance clothing is made available through our online store with Boathouse (link will be listed here when available) or from our online store.

Also, we encourage family and friends to buy some spirit wear as well!

Step 7: Attend Swim Test (date TBD)

The swim test requires the athlete to swim 100 yards, tread water for 2 minutes and put on a flotation device while in the water.

The swim test occurs at Audrey Moore Rec Center (8100 Braddock Road, Annandale). Car pools are organized for the athletes.

Step 8: Arrange Transportation

During the spring season, rowers may need to commute from TJ to the river directly after school. We arrange for a bus to take freshmen to the river for each day of practice, while transportation home is typically organized by parents and rowers. Learn more about transportation options here.

Step 9: Become a Part of Our Family

During the Spring season, we host events at which novices can become a part of the TJ Crew Community. For example, on the Friday evenings before regattas, we host pasta parties, where a TJ Crew family near the river hosts all of our rowers for a pasta dinner.
