Join TJ Crew

We're excited that you're interested in joining our team! Follow the instructions below to become a member of the most athletically and academically successful community at TJ. Throughout the registration process, if you have any questions, please email tjcrewmembershipchair@gmail.com

Step 1: Complete TJ Crew Registration Form

Register with TJ Crew using this link: https://forms.gle/furLGr4Leoe3WLPF8

Once the registration form is complete, both students and parents will be invited to join the TJ Crew Slack account. We ask the returning rowers also complete this form, even if you are already on Slack.

Step 2: Complete FCPS Required Athletics Forms

  1. Create an account and complete forms on the TJ rSchool Athletic Registration Portal (https://tjhsst-ar.rschooltoday.com/)

a. Select “CREW” under Spring Sports

b. Complete online forms (concussion education, emergency care card, weight room waiver)

  1. VHSL Pre-Participation Exam Form (mail or hand in to Heather Murphy, TJ Athletic Trainer)

  2. Copy of COVID Vaccination Card (mail or hand in to Heather Murphy, TJ Athletic Trainer). (Vaccination exemption information is available at https://tjsths.rschoolteams.com/).

Note: If your student participated in a TJ sport this year and you previously completed all three steps above, you do not need to complete again. However, you should log in to https://tjhsst-ar.rschooltoday.com/ to confirm that CREW is selected under Spring Sports.

Step 3: Pay TJ Crew Fees (once you are ready to join the team; this is not necessary for Winter Conditioning)

Pay tjcrewtreasurer@gmail.com via Zelle. Please note, some banks (e.g., USAA, Citizens Bank, PNC) have a transfer limit of $1000 per 24 hour period through Zelle; if this applies to you, and your total fees are over $1000, you may pay in two installments. Alternatively, anyone may pay by check if they prefer. Checks should be made out to "Thomas Jefferson School of Science and Technology Crew Booster, Inc." Please email tjcrewtreasurer@gmail.com for mailing address if you wish to pay by check.

**Please note, if you are not yet certain that you want to join the team, you can still participate in Winter Conditioning**

Fees

  1. “Early Bird” Registration Fee (payment on or before Dec 1): Novice Rowers $975; Returning Rowers $1,125

  2. “Regular” Registration Fee (after Dec 1): Novice Rowers $1,050; Returning Rowers $1,200

  3. Practice bus (generally mandatory for Freshmen) will be approximately $500. Specific information and practice bus payment instructions to follow.

  4. Expenses for travel to out-of-town regattas for Qualifying Boats is not included in this fee. Travel information and estimated costs will be detailed as plans are finalized.

  5. TJ Crew has implemented a scholarship program to assist families for whom payment of the full registration fee is a financial burden. Specifically, scholarships may be available for students who have been approved for Free and Reduced Meals for the current year. A description of the scholarship program is available at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nvYS8V-kPJFLyTm1q6eohzdasbgWwM2LijFNDdGxo9U/edit?usp=sharing

Step 4: Create/Renew US Rowing Membership (required to compete!)

Create (or renew) membership (basic) with US Rowing and sign the updated liability waiver at usrowing.org. If your membership is current, you only need to renew if it expires during the season. The US Rowing membership is free, but there is a $15 admin fee.

  1. Novices:

a. Click “Join Now” (top right banner), select “Individual” and “Join”.

b. Search for Thomas Jefferson High School Crew Boosters, Inc. Our Organization Code is ECUCP.

  1. Returning Rowers can log in and renew (if expires during season)

NOTE: US Rowing is currently changing its administrative procedures, including adding a “Safe Sport” requirement for regatta volunteers (including all parents). We will notify families if any additional US Rowing steps are required later in the season.

Step 5: Attend Winter Conditioning

During the winter, our team trains after school at TJ in preparation for the spring season. In fall 2021, winter conditioning will start on December 1st. Our coach-led winter conditioning sessions take place from 4 PM to 6:15 PM each weekday. Regular attendance for winter conditioning workouts is essential to success in the spring, and is HIGHLY recommended, especially for novice rowers who have never touched an oar. Learn more about winter conditioning here. (If you are already planning to do a winter sport, no problem! Just try to attend winter training whenever you get the chance so you can learn some of the basic techniques you'll need in the spring.)

Step 6: Dress for Success

All TJ Crew rowers are required to race in TJ Crew Uniforms (or "uni"s for short). See our Uniforms & Gear page for more details. Additionally, we have numerous accessories that almost all team members purchase for their own benefit, including TJ Crew duffel bags, TJ Crew jackets, and TJ Crew hats. TJ Crew rowers performance clothing is made available through our online store with Boathouse (link will be listed here when available) or from our online store.

Also, we encourage family and friends to buy some spirit wear as well!

Step 7: Attend Swim Test (date TBD)

The swim test requires the athlete to swim 100 yards, tread water for 2 minutes and put on a flotation device while in the water.

The swim test occurs at Audrey Moore Rec Center (8100 Braddock Road, Annandale). Car pools are organized for the athletes.

Step 8: Arrange Transportation

During the spring season, rowers may need to commute from TJ to the river directly after school. We arrange for a bus to take freshmen to the river for each day of practice, while transportation home is typically organized by parents and rowers. Learn more about transportation options here.

Step 9: Become a Part of Our Family

During the Spring season, we host events at which novices can become a part of the TJ Crew Community. For example, on the Friday evenings before regattas, we host pasta parties, where a TJ Crew family near the river hosts all of our rowers for a pasta dinner.
