Practices start on the water, at Sandy Run Regional Park, with the start of the spring sport season. For 2026, this will be on February 23rd. Until this time, rowers have been training at crew winter conditioning or with their winter sport.
Rowers practice outdoors every weekday after school and Saturdays in the morning. Rowers depart school once school is let out or during 8th period B block on Wednesdays and Fridays. See our transportation page for information on getting to and from Sandy Run. Practices are also held on Saturdays until the regatta season begins. All novices who are not on a varsity boat will practice at every day except for Tuesdays.
It's important to dress in layers for outdoor practices, especially earlier in the spring season. Temperatures are also cooler on the water. Layers that are breathable, not too loose, and with a waterproof outer layer are recommended. A hat helps retain heat; gloves, however, cannot be worn while rowing. Bringing crocs or slides is also useful to keep from bringing your shoes onto the boat and risk soaking them.
Make sure to bring water and snacks. There is a water fountain to refill bottles available at Sandy Run, but it isn't active until temperatures are high enough. A pair of dry socks can be useful. There are changing cubbies available as well.
