For my fellow, advance-planning parents, a heads up on TJ Crew’s two away regattas that entail overnight travel. More detailed information, and permission slips, will be sent electronically in early April. The goal of this posting is to allow you to save the date, know what to broadly expect, and reserve hotel rooms, if desired.

The first away regatta is St. Andrews on Saturday, April 19, 2014. This is a day event, without overnight travel. It is a beautiful course and a highlight of the season. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

The first two-day regatta of the season is the Stotesbury Cup Regatta on May 16 & 17, 2014 in Philadelphia, PA. For Stotesbury, the coaches plan to take the first, second and third eights (boats) on both the boys’ and girls’ teams, as well as the boys’ and girls’ freshman eight.   Coaches will also take a few alternates in case of illness, injury, etc.  For freshman and novice parents, your child’s coach will be able to predict whether your child’s boat will be competing in this race around the time of spring break, two-a-day practices. The travel arrangements for the students are made by the travel coordinator, Lisa Layfield.

For the parents of rowers who can safely guess that they will need a room, we will be staying, once again, at the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West. There is a block of special-rate rooms reserved for TJ Crew parents at $184.00 a night for Thursday and/or Friday night. Parents can call (888) 233-9527 and mention they are with the Thomas Jefferson High School Parents. Or they can log on to: The reservation cutoff date is April 15th, 2014. After that all rates will be based upon availability. The cancellation terms are a minimum of 48 hours. BUT if you find you need to cancel a reservation, please let the travel coordinator, Lisa Layfield, know before you release it.  Staying at the same hotel as the team is fun, and most years there are more families who wish to do so than parent rooms available.

The second two-day regatta is the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Regatta on May 23 & 24, 2014 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, NJ. This is a new location for the race. The competitors for this race are determined by the results of the state finals on May 3 for the lower boats (Ted Phoenix Regatta) and May 10 for the upper boats (VASRA Championships). The arrangements for the qualifying rowers, coxswains, and alternates will be made by the travel coordinator.

Just like Stotes, a block of special-rate rooms has been set aside for the parents at $149.00 a night for Thursday and/or Friday night. We, and the team, will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Princeton, 102 Carnegie Center, Princeton, NJ 08540. The link for reservations is: . The cutoff date for reservations is May 1, 2014. The cancelation policy is a minimum of 24 hours. The reservation link only allows one room to be booked at a time. If you need more than one room, you will need to enter the site twice. Again, if you reserve a room and later find you will not need it, please contact Lisa Layfield before releasing the reservation. Another family may want it.

The races start early in the morning on Friday and Saturday. The team heads to Philly on Thursday morning. Staying Thursday and/or Friday night at the hotel makes it easy to be at the river’s edge by race time. The team is back on the bus and headed to TJ at roughly 5:00 pm Saturday (depending on how many boats advance to Saturday’s races, and when those races are scheduled).

If you would like more information about away regattas, the TJ Crew website has links, directions, and information (regatta info -> regatta directions, volunteering, and food tabs).
