Coaches Corner - January 2013

posted Jan 12, 2013, 8:08 PM by TJ Crew Webmaster

In January, May can seem so far away. When we’ve been staring at the same yellow tile walls and have put in thousands of meters on the erg during these dark, cold months, it seems like those long, warm afternoons on the river will never come. But come they will, and sooner than we think. We have only five weeks until we hit the water and four short months until our championship races begin. Now is the time for our final preparations for the season.

The good news is we’ve already been preparing. We’ve had a great turn out at winter training this year. We’ve had so many rowers attending that we’ve had to buy more ergs! To those rowers who have been attending training regularly, keep it up. Your hard work will pay off come May. For those rowers who have not been training, this is the time to start. Your teammates are depending on you. Invest the effort in them and in yourselves.

In addition to your athletic preparations, prepare yourself logistically for the season. Keep your grades up, get your paperwork in, complete your concussion education (and have a parent do it too), arrange your carpool, and complete your money points and service hours. Get those things out of the way so that on the water you can focus solely on getting faster.

Another facet of our season preparation is recruitment. With only 3 weeks until registration closes, we need to keep recruiting those freshmen and novices. We’ve already seen the potential in some strong new rowers at winter training this year, which is exciting, but we can always use more athletes.

Finally, prepare yourself for the season mentally. Review your goals. If you haven’t set any goals, take the time to do that now. Make sure your goals are specific, measurable and attainable. Ask yourself what you want out of your season and what you are going to do to get there.
