Coaches Corner - Fall 2011

I have been looking forward to the 2012 racing season for some time (yes, I do live for rowing), but this summer, culminating with this week's boys Junior B sculling camp, has truly peaked my excitement.

The boys team only graduated 2 rowers out of the varsity boat and this summer has helped to strengthen our 2012 rowers' skills and commitment. Scott Gibson attended a 3 week development camp sponsored by US Rowing and returned to row with Thompson Boat Center at the Canadian Henley. Alex Yang attended the same development camp. Joe Angello spent the summer rowing at Thompson Boat Center racing at both the US Club National Championships and Canadian Henley, and was one of the first of the TJ rowers to sign up for fall rowing at with NVRC. Ryan Madani has logged over 75 hours on Coach Alex’s web based summer log book (Ryan has averaged over an hour a day, seven days a week, since we concluded our 2011 campaign at SRAA Nationals) and there are quite a few rowers with over 50 hours of workouts including Nick Skeen, Daniel Kang, Kyu Kim, and Willie Nuckols. As I write this James Bollinger, Joe Downs, and Larry Hensley just completed a sculling camp, sponsored by US Rowing, in which they spent 10 days learning to row singles and logging over 120 miles.

The girls team is just as promising with five rowers returning and just as hard working. Erin Slatery and Colleen Maher both participated in the US Rowing’s high performance camp including spending time training in Germany with the German junior national team hopefuls. Jenna Pollock matched Scott and Alex by attending the girls US Rowing Development Camp. Rachel Iwicki and Grace Zeng completed the girls version of the 10 day US Rowing junior B sculling camp and Christine Lucky leads the girls with over 60 hours of logged workouts.

My policy is no one has a seat in this year’s boat based on what they did last year and from what I have seen the competition for the nine seats is going to make us that much faster. Three weeks until fall rowing starts, three months until the start of winter workouts, and nine months to Stotesbury!
