Are you ready to Rumble?

We have had a very good first month and a half with some success in our preliminary races, a nice visit with Shrewsbury School, and lots of miles up to and through spring break in some beautiful weather. Now we have to ramp up for our hardest weeks of racing until we get into the championship season.

We saw one of the best crews in England when Shrewsbury School came to visit and we will see some of the best crews in the United States when we race at St Andrews on the 21st. We need to be and will be ready. There is a cup at St Andrews that needs to come home and some trophies for VASRA championships that need a home in Virginia!

I am proud of the preparation and dedication all of you have shown, but now it is time to step beyond dedication to commitment. An exaggerated analogy to explain the difference: if you are having bacon and eggs for breakfast, the chicken is dedicated to your breakfast - the pig is committed. That may seem extreme, but to win against the competition we will be racing against in the next few weeks we need to shift our frame of mind.

In the words of one of the United States' successful and well known coaches, Jim Dietz, “In rowing, as in life, there are competitors and there are racers. The competitor works hard and rows to his limit. The racer does not think of limits, only the race."

“No limits” would be a fitting call at the 750 meter mark – pushing through to another level when others begin to succumb to their limits.

We have a proud tradition that was hard earned by your predecessors and I challenge each of you to uphold that tradition with clear focus at practice, good sportsmanship at all times, and aggressive racing that transcends your self established confines.

Attention! Go!
