Summer and Fall Rowing Opportunities

By Coach Bill Randall

There are a number of opportunities to row outside of the high school season. For the fall I recommend Resilient Rowing Club (I am biased since I have moved from coaching for NVRC to coaching for Resilient).  Please talk to me (cjsb@verizon.net)  or send your questions to resilientrowingclub@gmail.com.  Registration for Resilient Rowing Club is available at  Ronin Racing's website:

Learn to Rowhttp://www.roninregistration.com/rowing/info.asp?GroupID=145516&p=default&pt=rowing&InfoType=Register

There are also some select opportunities for some of the top rowers during the summer through US Rowing.

NVRC Summer Program: This program in its third year and plans to expand from last year and is for rowers that are serious about training.  Information is available at www.row4NVRC.org

NVRC Fall Program: Again the web site is www.row4NVRC.org.  The site has been updated and ther are competitive, developmental, and learn to row programs available through NVRC.

Thompson Boat Center Program: Summer and fall competitive rowing program rowed out of the Thompson Boat Center in Washington, DC (near the Watergate).  The web site is: http://www.thompsonboatcenter.com/

These are the two big programs in the area and offer two separate locations around the area and if you are interested in competitive rowing, racing and learning/improving your rowing these are the best opportunities.

Other Opportunities:

Old Dominion Boat Club (ODBC) Select Crew: Summer and fall program rowed out of the Alexandria Community Boat Club in Old Town Alexandria.   From reading the web site there does not appear to be a competitive summer program this summer. http://www.tcwcrew.org/programs/summercrew.html

Prince William Crew Association will run three 2 week long junior sculling skills camp sessions on the Occoquan for both experienced Junior men and women rowers. The camp will be run out of the Oxford Boathouse on the Prince William side of the Occoquan. The program is for rowers with at least one year of rowing experience. Sculling experience is NOT required. Each camp session is two weeks long and will run Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 10:am. The maximum number of rowers per session is 12.   Most rowers will row in 4X and 2Xs but more experienced scullers may also row in singles.
The camp fee is $225.
The camp dates are: Session 1: 24 June to 5 July, Session 2: 8 July to 19 July, Session 3: 22 July to 2 August
Registration will close the Friday before each camp session is scheduled to start.
Registration is through roninracing.com at

There are quite a number of summer rowing camps. Most of them are a week long and offer an opportunity to row and experience a little of the atmosphere of the school they are being held at.

I can not list them all so I will list some web sites that list some of the available camps:

Row 2K – a great source of information about rowing: http://row2k.com/camps/

Concept 2 – the manufacturer of our ergs and oars and a true rowers company: http://www.concept2.com/us/oars/opportunities/default.asp
