Policy for Bus to the River
January 2017

Bus Service for Freshmen and Novice Rowers

To ease transportation after school to crew practice at Sandy Run, the team arranges for bus service for freshmen and novice rowers.

  • All freshmen rowers must ride the bus. Freshmen may not ride in student-driven carpools to the river.  (The exceptions will be for freshmen riding in parent-driven carpools or for freshmen being driven by their sibling).
  • Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may ride the bus if there are any available seats. Novices are given priority over returning rowers.  Selection is based on the date and time of registration.  For example if there is room for four returning rowers, and five returning rowers signed up for the bus, then the first four rowers that registered will get to ride the bus.  A refund will be given to the fifth rower.  By February 8th families of novices and returning rowers will be notified if they are on the wait list.
  • Bus service will be four days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) to match the practice schedule for freshmen and novices.
  • * Bus service is round-trip on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  NOTE:  It is not mandatory to ride the bus back to school.  Rowers may arrange for their own ride home from the river.
Bus service starts on the first day of practice at the river for freshmen and novices, on February 22, 2017, and continues through the end of the practice season in May.
  • Each family with a rower taking the bus must provide an adult to chaperone the bus one time during the season.  See Family Requirement below.

Family Requirement – Please read

Each bus rider family must chaperone the bus once.  This is because Fairfax County Public Schools requires an adult (age 25 and above) to ride on the bus as a chaperone. It is against FCPS policy for the bus driver to drive the students without a chaperone.

  • The parent or guardian must sign up and schedule the date on which he/she will be a chaperone, prior to their rower being allowed to ride the bus. Chaperone dates are on a first come, first served basis.  Bus departure times may be subject to change for school activities, testing, and events.

  • If you are unable to chaperone for the day you signed up to ride the bus, you are responsible for providing another chaperone.

If a chaperone is a no-show on his/her day, then ALL students must disembark from the bus and find a ride home as the school buses will have already left the school campus.

Cost

A deposit of approximately $575 is due when you register online.  This is an estimate of the cost for the season.  We will know the exact price once we know how many rowers sign up.

To Register – (completed Online)

  • Bus service for the season is on a first-come, first served basis established by the registration date and time; however, freshmen will have first priority and novices will have second priority.
